when looking at a potential home to buy what do you look for?

July 27th, 2010

or do you perfer a fixer upper? okay so we may be selling our house and we plan to do some renovations to try to bring up the value. and i am trying to figure out where to start. here is a quick describtion. big backyard, front porch, garden, swing in front of the garden, green carpet, hardwood kitchen floor. so what are the ups to that and the downs? and what would you change about it? sorry for my spelling its late.

I would probably take out the green carpet and go with hardwood floors throughout the whole house or choose a nuetral carpet color. You can also help sell a home by working on the landscaping outside the house. Just some suggestions. Also painting the walls is a pretty cheap way to make a home look a lot newer than it may be.

In "A Secret Garden", how did Colin’s mother die?

July 23rd, 2010

I seem to remember she fell off a swing in her garden.

Is this correct?

Nice choice of reading materials. :) I’ve got the books, and the movies, too.

A short while after giving birth to Colin, Colin’s mother was in her garden on the swing. She fell off and broke her neck, paralysing her whole body and killing her instantly.

In his grief, Colin’s father locked the Secret Garden for good, never wanting anyone to go in there ever again. He was angry with the garden for killing his wife.

I hope this helps. :)

i want a garden without grass of to much concrete,is this possible?

July 18th, 2010

ok, heres the deal,my back garden is quite small, its used for my children to play in,there is only a metal mesh kind of fence either side as both neigbours have children my childrens age and they all play together.so the back garden is really theres as i dont really like the fact that people can see me sitting in it lol.i have a dog,he loves the garden,a collie,he isnt very distructive but he does like to play a game at the bottom of the garden,he jumps up at the fence continuesly making the grass non existant there.also there are patches all over garden as he goes to the toilette and kills the grass.he has a digging spot at the top of garden which he sticks to and doesn’t dig anywhere else.i have a concrete path, quite large.it goes from house at top of garden to fence at bottom and to shed.also a drain so i have had to put garden on 2 levels or it would have just been a big slope.i do sit out there sometime and i have a garden swing which i sit on in evenings when all children have gone to bed.
heres the problem.my garden looks a mess.no matter how many times i sort grass out big mud patches appear and its not just from dog, grass doesn’t take very well in these gardens.
also there is no sun in garden but pot plants seem to do ok
i dont want concrete as its not that friendly if children fall over and wouldnt be the best thing for dog to go to the toilette on
gravel would be no good, the kids would have a field day and be digging it up
wood chip no good ,same problem
and i dont want the garden to look silly,i tried that fake grass stuff, which was good, but as garden is so small it just looked stupid
can anyone help
i thought about sand, but would that get trailed into the house and can kids play in it cos they would want to,maybe a bit to messy?
any ideas massivly appriciated as ive no idea what to do ive tried so many things

what happens when the gate swings open?

July 9th, 2010

I am still working on this thing. Any suggestions appreciated.

Garden gate 2

trampled pathway
kutzu vine binds access
chokes once thriving plants
tattered garden gate
guards broken dreams
hopeless probabilities
terra cotta memories

hears silent sounds
swings open

aspirations lost
now unfurl
abandoned visions
misplaced expectations
gather possibilities
flourish again
probably, Mag
thanks

Would adding the "ing" to gather and flourish lend this piece some action?

I like where it is going.

Jonathan Engineering – Coupled-Swings- Clore Garden- Israel

July 5th, 2010

Coupled-pendulums.
The Coupled Swings exhibit demonstrates how energy can be transferred from one object to another. The two swings are constructed with cables joining them.

One visitor pushes himself/herself or is given a push and after a few back-and-forth movements the first swing will stop and the second swing will start swinging.

This attractive swing enables visitors to experience the energy transfer between themselves. The sensation is unique & joyful. It also encourages fun social interactions among visitors.

Does North London have any fantastic beer garden pubs with a play-area?

July 5th, 2010

I am in San Diego. I am bringing my husband and son to London to spend fathers day with my dad. I want to take all my boys out for the day to a lovely pub for lunch. My son is 2 and does not sit still for long so I am looking for somewhere with swings or play equipment to keep the munchkin occupied giving me time to relax with my dad. Do you know of anywhere that would fit the bill? My dad lives in E.Finchley but we are willing to travel.

Lots of pubs have beer gardens and some even welcome children! You can do a fairly specific search on http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/search.shtml
and read customer reviews

Can i opt for cane or bamboo wood swing for my garden or roof top? i mean does get spoilt in rain and sun?

July 1st, 2010

I have a folding workbench (Workmate) that has a bamboo top. I also have a couple pieces of unfinished oak flooring sitting on it. And they’ve been sitting outside for about 6 months. The oak is weathering somewhat, as you would expect wood to do. But, the bamboo top on the workbench is getting covered in a layer of black mold.

The problem with bamboo is that it’s a grass, not a wood. So, it’s more susceptible to problems like molding, rotting, and bugs.

Now, if you are buying a rattan (cane) or bamboo swing that has been treated with paint or a clear sealer, that might not be a problem. But, just know that bamboo is more susceptible to weathering and aging problems than wood.
